We will teach you how to grow and care for this plant in the following section ofSelMagzJust follow the steps carefully.
Buy Fresh Ginger
To plant ginger, first buy several large, fleshy ginger buds. Fresh ginger has a thin, smooth skin and doesn’t need peeling. Usually, these ginger pieces have bumps where the sprouts will grow.
You can soak these buds in water, wrap them in a damp paper towel, and keep them in a plastic bag in a dark place. After a week, they’ll sprout, and you can plant them. Alternatively, you can put the ginger piece in warm water for a few hours and then directly plant it in the soil of a pot.
Choose a suitable pot
Select a pot about 12 cm in diameter and 36 cm deep, and make several drainage holes in the bottom to let excess water escape.
Fill the pot with nutritious soil
Fill the pot with rich soil, compost, and water. Sandy soil mixed with leaf compost works well because it drains water nicely. A good mix is 50% cocopeat + 40% perlite + 10% peat moss, or 60% cocopeat + 40% perlite. You can also add small stones or industrial gravel at the bottom.
Plant the ginger
To plant ginger properly, cut off the tough outer layer and place it in contact with the soil. When cutting the ginger, make sure each piece has a sprout (large or small). Each sprout is called an eye, and the more eyes, the easier it is for the plant to grow.
Create a small hole in the soil, place the ginger in it, cover with 3-4 cm of soil, spray water to keep the environment moist, and wait for the plant to sprout.
Tips for planting and harvesting ginger in pots
To get good results, there are some important tips you should know, including:
Plant ginger in spring
The best time to plant ginger is early or mid-spring because it doesn’t tolerate cold weather. To avoid freezing, keep the pot indoors, and you can plant ginger any time of the year indoors.
Don’t water too much
After planting, give the ginger very little water. Water the plant enough to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can harm the plant. As summer ends and temperatures drop, you’ll notice yellowing leaves, which means you should stop watering.
Don’t place the pot under direct sunlight
Strong sunlightSunlightExcessive sunlight can damage the plant. Place the pot where it receives about 2-3 hours of gentle morning sun.
Keep the plant at a proper temperature
Position the pot where the temperature is between 75 and 80 °F (24-27°C). Ginger doesn’t grow well in cold weather. The temperature shouldn’t be less than 10°C. If you live in a warm, humid climate, you can grow ginger outside. Very hot weather can also affect growth, so in tropical areas, keep the pot in the shade.
Harvest ginger after a few months
Ginger grows slowly and needs 3-4 months to develop sufficiently. After 10-12 months, when the leaves reach 50-60 cm, you can carefully dig up the rhizomes at the front of the plant and use them.
You can also carefully trim small leaves on the surface for cooking. Use a clean knife and be careful not to damage the ginger root when cutting.
