What is a Moka Pot

But first, let’s see what a Moka Pot is.

It is a compact coffee maker shaped like an octagonal cup made in Italy, called a Moka Pot. It brews coffee in the style of espresso without needing a large or expensive machine.

The Moka Pot was invented in 1933 by an Italian engineer named Alfonso Bialetti. It easily absorbs heat from the flame and converts coffee beans into liquid coffee with minimal energy; the coffee made with a Moka Pot is very delicious.

However, espresso lovers believe that coffee brewed with a Moka Pot does not produce much foam and may sometimes have a slightly burnt taste. To prevent a burnt flavor, you should warm the water slightly before use so that the Moka Pot doesn’t need to stay on the stove too long, which helps avoid burning. Be careful, as the Moka Pot can become very hot quickly.

How to Use and Brew Coffee with a Moka Pot

First, fill the water reservoir of the Moka Pot just below the pressure valve. Make sure the water level does not go above the valve, because otherwise, the right steam won’t be created and the coffee won’t taste right. Then, place the filter basket on top of the water reservoir.

Warm the water first. It might seem like an extra step, but it’s very important for great flavor. If you put the Moka Pot directly on the stove when it’s cold, the metal will overheat and make the coffee taste bitter.

Grind the coffee beans, making sure they are ground for a Moka Pot, which is a bit coarser than espresso grind. Fill the filter basket with coffee grounds until it’s fully filled without pressing the coffee.

Brew Coffee with a Moka Pot

Pour the pre-warmed water into the bottom chamber of the Moka Pot up to just below the valve.

Put the filter in place and fill it completely with coffee, avoiding pressing the grounds down.

Set the stove to medium. Too high heat can burn the coffee, making it very bitter. Stay near the stove and don’t leave, because the coffee will be ready in a few minutes.

When the coffee starts to brew, it will make a different sound. Then, place the Moka Pot directly on the stove until the brewed coffee reaches the top chamber. The heat causes the water to rise, preventing it from burning.

Pour the coffee into a cup. Warm the cup with hot water leftover from before so that the espresso stays hot longer.
